Music Performance Trust Fund
The Music Performance Trust Fund (MPTF) is an independent organization funded by the Recording Industries of North America, created in 1948 through a historic agreement between the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and major record labels. Current contributing labels include Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Walt Disney Records. The fund’s primary mission is to support live professional music performances that are free and open to the public.
Grants are available for engagers hiring TMA musicians in the Greater Toronto Area under the following conditions:
- General Performances: Grants of approximately 50% of basic scale wages, pension, and HST for a minimum three-hour call.
- School Performances (during school hours): Grants at 100%.
- Senior’s Performances: Solo and duo performances at Seniors’ residences are funded at 70% for a limited number of performances where the residence contributes $200 per concert. (50% funding for trio and larger ensembles.)
- Special Projects: Grants at 100% for events such as Black History Month, International Women’s Day, Jazz Appreciation Month, and others are available on a case-by-case basis
Recommended performance venues include:
- Schools (Public & Private)
- Seniors’ Residences & Hospitals
- City Squares, Community Centres & Libraries
- Street Festivals, Canada Day, and other community events
All funding requests must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the performance to trustfund@tma149.ca. Submissions can be made by either the musician or the sponsoring organization. MPTF will review each application for eligibility and notify applicants accordingly. Once the performance is confirmed, grant cheques are issued to the engager.
Important: A TMA Live Performance Contract is mandatory for all MPTF-funded performances.
Please note that MPTF does not provide grants for fundraising, political, religious, or charitable events.
