Richard Sandals
Director
Richard Sandals has long been a steadfast advocate for the Toronto Musicians’ Association (TMA), where his leadership and dedication have left a lasting impact. Having first joined the Board in 2007, Richard served until 2020, and his decision to rejoin in 2024 reflects his deep commitment to the community of musicians he has long championed. For Richard, the TMA isn’t just an organization—it’s a vital lifeline for musicians, providing them with the support, representation, and advocacy they need to thrive in an ever-changing industry.
His work with the TMA is grounded in over two decades of experience as principal trumpet with the National Ballet Orchestra, a role he has held since 2001. His time in the orchestra has shown him firsthand the challenges musicians face, both on stage and behind the scenes. This insight shaped his active involvement on the Orchestra Committee and the Negotiating Committee, where he worked to ensure that his fellow musicians were fairly represented. His service with the TMA Board has been marked by this same spirit of advocacy—ensuring that every musician has a voice and a seat at the table.
Since 2018, Richard’s advocacy has extended beyond Toronto, as he took on the role of Negotiator with the Symphonic Services Division of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM). Here, his work has continued to push for fair contracts and improved working conditions across the symphonic world, always with the goal of empowering musicians at every level.
Richard’s return to the TMA Board in 2024 is a testament to his ongoing passion for the organization and its mission. His leadership is built on years of experience, but more importantly, it’s driven by a deep understanding of the unique needs of musicians. Through his work with the TMA, the National Ballet Orchestra, and the AFM, Richard has dedicated himself to ensuring that musicians are not only heard but supported, every step of the way.
